Koss had never been very good about advertising their lifetime warranty, so I bought another Pro/4AA from Radio Shack - exactly like the original after about 20 years. Still have them. They work well when listening to stuff from the computer in the wee hours.
But I had the senn HD497 and the porta pro. The HD497s are often compared to the sr60 or just ranked slightly under. There is a huge step between the porta pro and the senn hd497, these worth any additional bucks. The porta pro is a bit mid-bass heavy and its high are far too be as good as the cans of the higher class.

Porta Pro also have a better more durable design. and have a decent open sound. exceptionally well-matched in frequency. mid-range performance is very good. The KSC75 has better highs than the Portapro/Sportapro. I put the KSC75 drivers on the Sportapro headband. They clicked right in. I couldn't get the KSC75 drivers to fit on the Portapro headband, but the Portapro drivers will snap into the KSC75 earhooks. I bought the Portapro, Sportapro, and KSC75 more than 10 years ago.

The easiest mod would be looking up for some Sennheiser PX200 cushions. They fit perfectly. Though they are much smaller then the discontinued koss SST model. Otherwise you'd have to take a cheap full size headphone and replacing its drivers with the koss ones.

Still debating whether I will get a KSC75 and use these drivers on the PP headband just out of curiosity Currently I am enjoying the sound of my Monk Plus a lot more than the PP even if the bass is not as "powerful". TLDR: Koss Porta Pro stock, in my opinion way too dark, muffled, muddy and lifeless.
