Adding an additional ground (s) may not be a bad idea! Right now the only way the frame is grounded is by way of the Motor mounts, then the starter. Running at least one more ground wire to the ground under the seat wouldn't be a bad idea. Its a waterfall of unfortunate issues if your not properly grounded.

The 750 ACE doesn't have that situation, positive battery voltage is supplied to both coils (see wiring diagram) and the timed -ve is supplied by the ICM box. There is some negative signal potential magic going on with the TCI (Honda ICM), but it doesn't behave like a CDI.
Try jumping the bike from a vehicle. Go to the red/yellow wire on the start solenoid and see if you get battery voltage when you have the key on and push the start switch button. That is the first part of the process. Then that power goes through the solenoid winding, and out the red/green wire to ground.
Check for power at the yellow/red wire on the solenoid. If it has power when you push the start switch, the solenoid or the ground side after it on the green/red wire, to all the safety switches is open circuited.
